PURE MICHIGAN! I'm so glad to be back in my home state! I started out of CK105 in Flint and, man, was I AWFUL. From there I worked at 92.1 The Edge in East Lansing and Wings 103.1 in Lapeer. My first Detroit gig was Z-Rock followed by 102.7 The Bear with Ted Nugent: talk about fun! Ted was hilarious and so great to fight with in the studio. When Ted took his show to his house and out of Detroit, things got a little less lively, so I took a job at WMMR in Philadelphia.
In Philly, I met my husband and we had our daughter, Mackenzie. I left WMMR and went to work part-time for WYSP while being home with our daughter. When Mackenzie turned four, we moved to Washington DC and I worked for DC101... also a riot. Washington DC is beautiful! There is nothing like the Cherry Blossom festival: simply amazing. We checked out museums and took ghost tours: the city is incredible.
A few years later, I started working for WRNR in Annapolis. I love the Annapolis vibe and the amazing people that populate Maryland's capitol. While with WRNR, my husband and I had our son, Jake, and I worked from home as WRNR's Digital Content Manager.
If I may tell you what you already know, Jay Towers is good people. When I found out I was going to be Jay's co-host, I literally screamed like I'd won the lottery. This is the funnest "job" I have ever had. Jay is a BLAST and he's also genuine, decent, a hard worker and also family oriented.... all values I hold in the highest respect... just please, don't tell him I said that... I like to keep him guessing.
My 25th high school reunion was this past Saturday. Honestly, it was more fun than the 20th because everyone seemed more laid back and comfortable in their own skin. The 20th was more of a dog and pony show… the 25th more like a backyard bbq… held in the old library… with no bbq food.
It makes me sad that the Flushing Library is no more, but the repurposing of the building is better than a demolition. Michael is my only friend from high school that I have regularly stayed in touch with. I have known him since 2nd grade. He is crazy and funny and we have a RICH TRADITION of trying our best to pull the meanest pranks we can on each other… although, this night, we worked in tandem.
We arrived around 7pm. There was a DJ who never spoke a word and rumor had it he played the role of “Officer Friendly” back in our early school days. Tonight Officer Friendly had chosen to remain silent. He played a plethora of 80’s music. Scritti Politti, Soft Cell, OMD, Katrina and the Waves and Frankie Goes to Hollywood… We heard the lyrics from the 80’s in a different fashion with our 43 year old ears and dissected them differently with our 43 year old brains. There was a consensus about the room that the controversial sound effects in “Relax” after Frankie yelled, “When you wanna…” were not so much sounds of ecstasy, but rather sounds of Montezuma’s Revenge. I’m not sure at what age we stop being grossed out by our elders bodily function talk, but I feel the rumblings of our own discourse beginning and it makes me sad.
A girl I CAN’T STAND was there… as soon as I saw her, I was repulsed. This chick hit my roommate, Sandy’s, car in the parking lot of JB’s (a Flint watering hole) TWENTY YEARS AGO…. Sandy was in her car when it happened and my classmate TOOK OFF. Sandy CHASED her on Dort Highway and managed to get her license plate number. Sandy reported her to the police. The police went to my classmate’s home and she told them, “It wasn’t me… I wasn’t at the bar. I’m pregnant.” INTERESTING PERSON! 20 years later and I am still full of strong emotion for her BS move. She was hanging in the circle of “popular” people from high school. I hung on the fringe with my funny, creative friends, or as we liked to call ourselves in high school… nerds.
Around 10pm, everyone started packing it up to head to the bar. Michael and I told everyone that we would meet them there... then we went home. I stayed over at Michael's house which was really fun. It used to be broken into apartments and I rented one of the apartments back in the early 90's.
My mom and dad didn't want to call me the next morning, figuring I stayed out late... lol, my 10:30pm late night Saturday. We used to go OUT at 10:30pm. Yeah for getting older.
